New Year's Eve Party Songs - 2009
Last year a friend asked me to compile a list of well-known pop tracks that should be on his party playlist, and I happily obliged. I did the same this year, albeit hastily. As I said to him:
“These aren’t necessarily my favorites, but these are some of the biggest tracks of the year from the pop, indie, and rap scenes. (I didn’t include a bunch that aren’t really suitable for parties like Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, etc.)”
MAJOR POP

- Kid Cudi - Make Her Say (feat. Kanye West, Common & A-Trak)
- The Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
- Lady Gaga - Just Dance (feat. Colby O’Donis) (or Paparazzi, or Bad Romance…)

Frank talk with Lady Gaga, Latimes.com
I love her music. She’s incredibly talented. Poker Face still does it for me, and I can’t wait to keep hearing her stuff.
But this interview is full of unbelievably pompous quotes. She’s an attractive woman who belts the shit out of dance songs, has great producers, and has a coherent image. It’s called pop music. It’s not genius, and it’s not a feminist movement—it’s a costume.
This is all happening not because Gaga is cute or takes off her clothes but because (to use one of her favorite words) she is a monster — a monster talent, that is, with a serious brain. (emphasis mine)
She’s kidding, right? Has she seen Lady Gaga? Or seen her music videos? (Weirdly, all the Poker Face videos are currently private, but here’s a live rendition.)
And, yoohoo—the album is called Fame Monster. She’s calling herself a monster. It’s called marketing.
“I don’t make it as a defense. I make it as, OK, guys, it’s been two years, and I’ve made a lot of music, and I know my greatness is individual. And I want every woman to be able to say that.” (emphasis mine)
Come. On.
Love the music, hate this article.

Wilcassettes makes you dancecassettes
The MTV Iggy blog likes my man Alan’s remix of “The Warm Heart of Africa” and gave him an interesting new description. AW, just roll with it!
Download the track here.
Alan Wilkis, a Brooklyn-based dance-music dude, takes “The Warm Heart of Africa” out of indie’s upper echelons and brings it to a poolside DJ booth.

Nightcrawlers - Push The Feeling On (1993)
In brief:
- I had never heard this until I Shazamed it from the radio.
- Shazam kicks serious ass. It was kind enough to recognize (“tag”) the song and note the time, date, and location (via iPhone GPS) of the tagging. (Aug 9, 2009, City of Milford, CT)
- I have no idea how this came on the radio in CT, but a group of us was on our way back from a road trip, so details are murky.
- Early-90s dance music still has a sacrosanct place in my heart. (cf. Show Me Love and Rhythm is a Dancer)
- The Nightcrawlers is “a house music project, assembled by producer, DJ and vocalist John Reid (born 6 September 1973) from Easterhouse, Scotland.”
- Turns out John Reid is not only a recognized dance producer but a songwriter who, among other things, co-wrote the American Idol hit A Moment Like This.
