K-Ci & JoJo - “Life” (1999)

When I was young I wasted precious funds on CDs by random artists—impulse buys at the mall. Among the record of oddball purchases—including Garbage, Madonna (Ray of Light, a surprise success), and Timbaland & Magoo—is K-Ci & JoJo’s “It’s Real”.  The real hit for me was this song, “Life”, which I played for weeks every time I got in the car.  Still a nice song with some bump.

Incidentally, if you also had an affinity for “contemporary urban romantic soul” back in the day, I recommend “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)” off Maxwell’s 1997 MTV Unplugged album. (Yes, I was 16 when I bought that.)
