Thanks, guy
Two distinct phrases pop up here and there in NYC—especially between men—that seem perfectly fine here but could easily be considered rude elsewhere (e.g., my native Ohio suburb).
1. “Let me get a…”
This is what people say when they approach a food situation that involves someone else taking their order. It may or may not be appended with “please”. There’s usually a “thanks” when food is exchanged, so it’s all good.
2. “guy”
Earlier today I helped a lost courier service driver find his way. “Thanks, guy”, he yelled while leaning out his van’s window. Interjections also work in this way (e.g., “Hey, guy!”). I’m operating under the assumption that leaving it bare “Hey!” would actually be rude, while using something even slightly more casual (man, bro, pal) would imply sarcasm.
Also, “boss”
This wouldn’t be considered rude elsehwere, but since I’m on the subject I might as well include it. This is what male employees—especially in food service, especially in Brooklyn (my experience is limited elsewhere)—often call male customers. “What can I get you, boss?”. I kind of love it.
