BPM iPhone app →
This app is handy for randomly figuring out the tempo of a song, but it’s also useful for honing your inner clock. Sometimes on the subway I’ll think of a tempo and see if I can tap it accurately, or, when listening to music, I’ll see if I can guess the bpm before I tap to find out.
Point is, it’s fun to hear a song, think for a sec, and come extremely close to guessing...

RRR + JamLegend = free fun
We’re always surprised by what songs catch on in certain forums or at certain times of year. Never would have predicted Declaration of Independence would be the top hit here.
educationalrap:
This summer we heard about a free web application called JamLegend that’s sort of like Rock Band but on the computer. The kicker: any artist can upload their music and have it turned into a game. ...
Zipcar iPhone app is here →
Zipcar is one of the coolest companies of this decade. A bonkers idea (scatter brand-new parked cars around a city and rent them by the hour!?) that they have pulled off with innovative reservation tools and pleasant customer service.
Daring Fireball:
This is one of those things that, from the perspective of my childhood, feels like The Future. A great idea well-done.
My plumber has an excellent business card. It says ‘Phil Jones’ on the top line....

Laptop battery myths
marco:
TUAW ends this article about laptop batteries with this trainwreck of “advice”:
Never leave the machine plugged in all the time. Laptops are meant to be portable. Using it as a desktop that never runs on the battery will destroy your battery life.
Cycles are your friend. Never letting the battery complete a cycle will greatly diminish your run-time. Try to avoid charging the battery...

Wilcassettes makes you dancecassettes →
The MTV Iggy blog likes my man Alan’s remix of “The Warm Heart of Africa” and gave him an interesting new description. AW, just roll with it!
Download the track here.
Alan Wilkis, a Brooklyn-based dance-music dude, takes “The Warm Heart of Africa” out of indie’s upper echelons and brings it to a poolside DJ booth.

Music Publishers Want Apple to Pay for iTunes... →
(On iTunes), you can stream radio, and you can preview tracks, things that we should be getting paid performance income for.
- David Renzer, CEO Universal Music Publishing Group
We have no choice but to assume Renzer does not use iTunes and has no idea how others use it. No idea.
Streaming radio stations are not provided by iTunes; iTunes aggregates the list of available stations. Those...

Unpaid Internships: common but illegal →
marco:
(via soupsoup)
The scenario is fairly typical: a company offers an opportunity to ‘break into the business’ in exchange for the intern working for free. You see many examples of this in the entertainment industry. […]
In order to qualify as an unpaid internship, the requirement is simple: no work can be performed that is of any benefit at all to the company. That is, you can not...

CrowdFlower →
A dead-simple front end to platforms like Mechanical Turk that let you crowdsource repetitive, boring tasks. Watch the live demo video to see it in action. I can’t wait to use it for the first time.

I think she’s in conference.
– Someone said this to me as a way of explaining quickly that the person for whom I was holding the elevator had engaged in an extended conversation with someone and that I should not wait for her.
I like it.

Adam Mathes compares “new entry” UIs on blogging services.
I recently tried the latest versions of modern blogging tools for some projects I was toying with and was appalled.
The primary purpose of blogging software is to blog.
This entails the writing and publishing of short form content.
Everything else is, basically, noise. Even if you don’t subscribe to a viewpoint that harsh,...

Go, Internet, Go
This just happened. A song-based commercial, aired during a break from a tennis event happening in Flushing Meadows, was
broadcast on TV in Boston
watched in Brazil via satellite
rebroadcast to the internet
watched online in Brooklyn and listened to on headphones
played into an iPhone
analyzed by Shazam
looked up on YouTube
listened to in full
and shared to a friend via chat [the URL]

What this is really about is race. That’s all there is to it.

This is different from honest political disagreement. Bush was one of the least-liked presidents we’ve ever had, especially by the end of his term, but nobody was bringing assault rifles to his...

Use Your Words
Sometimes you just want to send up a flare: tweet a song from Shazam; post a photo from your road trip; embed a YouTube video you just found. I get that. I do that. That’s the joy of microblogging.
But, you know, that doesn’t need to be the only way.
Friends, if we’re going to grow up, we’re going to have to start using our words. Describing things simply as...
