Soup: a new blogging/social platform →
Just discovered Soup, this crazy, Tumblr-like platform with some snazzy features. Registered a username but not planning on using it… for now, anyway.

FETHR, an Open-Source Twitter Protocol
Daniel Sandler leads a research project on transforming microblogging from a service (Twitter) into a protocol. His analogy of CompuServe mail’s evolution (an original “Email™” service) into a general e-mail protocol (SMTP) is helpful for putting this in context.
Part of the difficulty in explaining Twitter is that people think of it as a website rather than a mode of...

Anatomy of Educational Rap
Ever wondered how RRR (“Triple R”) makes educational rap? Here’s a rare behind-the-scenes look at the building process of “Layers of the Earth”, with audio excerpts at each step of development.
Bonus: you get to hear me rap.

Tweetie for Mac →
I just fired up Tweetie, a brand-new app for Twitter, and am loving it so far. It will probably replace Twitterrific as my laptop client. Took two seconds to get up and running: just launch the app and login.
John Gruber:
[W]hat I like best is that it is visually quiet. Most of the new desktop Twitter clients I’ve checked out try to show more at once. Twitter by its nature is inherently...

Strong Takes Relaunch →
After a flurry of content migration and coding, we’ve relaunched Strong Takes with a spiffy new website. Strong Takes is a daily (since March 2008) news-based publication where one of our writers takes a quote from a real news story and riffs on it. Jesse Andrews serves as Managing Editor and lead writer and is routinely hilarious. His conference chats and fake scripts are some of my...

Question of the Month
Why do we act embarrassed about liking certain songs/artists/genres? (i.e., Why are we ashamed of our own tastes?)

The MTA Is Not Your Mom
Dear fellow young NYC residents,
Really?
Look, I hate paying more for things like everyone else. I hate service changes and crowded trains and waiting on a platform. We all hate these things, but we ride anyway.
I’m sick of drunk, obnoxious kids screaming at MTA employees working on tracks at night. I’m sick of petulant signs and Tumblr memes. Everyone’s bitching about the...

MLA Handbook: Print is No Longer the Default... →
mediology:
This seventh edition says “that the medium of publication should be included in each works cited entry” rather than assuming it’s print.
I’m a little happier inside that the MLA no longer requires specific URLs. The combination of inconsistent (or poor) Web design and user error in pasting session-specific URLs rather than permalinks meant they were often useless, anyway.

The Heroes Album
Buy music, help the world.
“War Child: Heroes” is an unprecedented collaboration between music’s most heralded legends and the finest current artists.
We asked 15 ultimate icons to select a favourite song from their classic back catalogue and to nominate the new act they most trust to create a unique interpretation of that hand-picked track.
This album is the result: 15 exclusive...
The Birdhouse Demo →
John Gruber:
Even if you’re already not interested in the app itself—if you’re sitting there thinking to yourself, “Man, draft tweets is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard”, or if you don’t even use Twitter—at least watch the demo/introductory movie, which, I dare say, is the finest example of the form made to date. Note, for example, the reflection of the trees on the iPhone trim during the...

"The ipod cannot be restored because it contains...
I got this error message in iTunes (on a Mac) when trying to restore (i.e., reformat) an old iPod that has previously been used on a Windows machine. Tried a few solutions, but what finally worked was to erase the music that was already on the ipod, eject it, and reboot it. Once the iPod restarted and reconnected I was able to restore it.
How to reboot an iPod: Press and hold the Menu and...

My Take On Twitter
Twitter = Talking
Almost every week I encounter a person in my life who feels he doesn’t understand Twitter—not that there’s anything wrong with that. “I don’t get it”, she huffs. Or “What’s the point?” or “I don’t want to tell the world what I’m doing at all times.” Inevitably, I feel a strange compulsion to explain...
Note To Self
streeter:
Whenever I have an idea I email it to myself on my phone. Most of the time this works out pretty well, but sometimes iPhone’s predictive typing feature gets some words wrong and I don’t notice. For instance, when I had an idea to do a parody song I wanted to send myself “Octopus’s garden ringo singing about how they let him sing.” It came out as…

We Like What We Like
heyitseva:
Dear Jason,
I am in love with a guy who likes Fall Out Boy. I’m not talking about the occasional listen when his iPod is on shuffle. Fall Out Boy is literally his favorite band. Oh, and to make matters worse, he has a girlfriend. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Any advice?
Sincerely, Concerned in California

E-mail From My Mamma*
It took a while, but my family—including some extended relatives—is tuned in.
My personal cell is dead. (Just need to charge it.) I miss your twitters! I wish I was twittering myself - so many observations lately. Like that the cherry blossom trees are… just trees. Don’t know why they make such a fuss over them, unless it’s just a tourist draw (for all of the 10...
