New Year's Eve Party Songs - 2009
Last year a friend asked me to compile a list of well-known pop tracks that should be on his party playlist, and I happily obliged. I did the same this year, albeit hastily. As I said to him:
“These aren’t necessarily my favorites, but these are some of the biggest tracks of the year from the pop, indie, and rap scenes. (I didn’t include a bunch that aren’t really...

Ok, stop whatever you’re doing. Yes, I know it’s the last weekend before Christmas; put down the CC. Listen:
If you put your iPhone in a regular ziplock bag, you can still use it. As in, you can tap the screen all you want and it’ll respond just fine.
I honestly had no idea that this worked - my mind is blown. This means I can use my iPhone when I walk in the rain. I can read recipes...

Vimeo Sued By Capitol Records Over Lip Dubs →
zachklein:
I roared with a belly laugh when I read this headline in bed earlier today. Could Capitol Records truly be this misguided? Do they not realize that if you were to sort Internet brands by those most emblematic of creativity — not piracy — that Vimeo would line up at the top? Lip-dubbing is harmless and perfectly fun, and ultimately will define the aesthetic of an Internet generation....

Jango Artist Airplay →
I read about Jango this morning via our Tunecore account and immediately drafted a strongly negative post, but after taking a deep breath and thinking about it more, I’m reconsidering.
At first the idea of paying someone to play your songs on internet radio is borderline offensive (as if giving it away for free weren’t enough!), but as a marketing expense, it’s not a terrible...

Paramount to launch micro-budget movie division... →
The as-yet-unnamed division plans to finance as many as 20 “micro-budget” movies annually starting in 2010, according to people familiar with the studio’s plans who spoke on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement has not been made. A current Paramount executive will run the business, but the selection has not yet been revealed publicly. Funds for the movies — no more than $2...

So let’s talk traffic. We’ve got people who love this goddamn phone so much that they’re living on it. Yes, that’s crushing your network. Yes, 3% of your users are taking up 40% of your bandwidth. You see this as a bad thing. It’s not. It’s a good thing. It’s a blessing. It’s an indication that people love...

The future of music is Web-based, on-demand broadcast to any home or mobile phone.
But.
If it’s true, folding lala into iTunes will introduce lala (or lala’s technology) to a wider audience, but I don’t see it increasing the purchase of web-only tracks significantly in the near-term. Without reliable mobile 3G connections or a local cache for offline listening, it’s too...

The Tumblr Backup app is ready for its first beta testing.
Unlike other publishing sites’ approach to backups, our goal was to create a useful copy of your blog’s _content_ that can be viewed on any computer, burned to a CD, or hosted as an archive of static HTML files.
This is great news. Now, to look a gift horse in the mouth for a moment, let’s establish a rule that if you’re...

Shut up! Announcing your plans makes you less... →
Tests done since 1933 show that people who talk about their intentions are less likely to make them happen.
Announcing your plans to others satisfies your self-identity just enough that you’re less motivated to do the hard work needed.

Granted, having a public following can be meaningful for more than social reasons, which a relatively public figure may have, but if you’re there to be social, and that’s largely the way you use the network, what’s the point of leaving the gate open at all?
Is the issue simply that the signal-to-noise when you already reach a large audience is too low to ever be worth wading...

Shy Ronnie vs. Boston Public Schools
via educationalrap:
In case you you missed it, the most recent Digital Short on SNL, “Shy Ronnie” (feat. Rihanna), is pretty funny.
It struck a chord because it reminded me of the workshops RRR did with Boston Public Schools this past summer. We worked with three groups of middle school students to help them write and record a song about summer, including their own verses and a joint...
